Jason Haas, a 15-year-old musical prodigy from Springs, Johannesburg, embodies the transformative power of music.
His story unfolds from the early age of four, when the melodies of his grandmother’s old piano captivated him, sparking a passion fueled by his mother’s love for music. This love nurtured his talent, leading him to master his first piece, Canon in D major, by ear—an early indication of his extraordinary musical intuition.

Despite the lack of formal lessons, Jason’s determination saw him turning to the internet, where he fearlessly tackled compositions by his favorite composers, Frederic Chopin, and Franz Liszt, that would intimidate even seasoned musicians. His remarkable ability to grasp complex pieces by ear quickly established him as a standout talent.
Jason’s educational journey faced a hurdle when the language requirements at the East Rand School of the Arts shifted, making it difficult for him to continue his studies there. However, this setback didn’t dampen his spirit; he found a new home with the East Rand Youth Orchestra. Joining the orchestra in July 2023, Jason didn’t need to audition; he simply introduced himself, sat at the piano, and became an integral part of the ensemble, despite only having learned to read music the previous year under the guidance of Mr. J. Manamela, his piano teacher who became a mentor and friend.

Crowdfunding on BackaBuddy
Initially unbeknownst to his mother, Jason initiated a crowdfunding campaign on BackaBuddy intending to acquire a secondhand black polished Middle Ford baby grand piano, priced at R150,000. This venture is more than a quest for a musical instrument; it’s a means for Jason to engage in consistent practice and substantially improve his musical skills. Since the launch of the campaign, almost R4,000 has been raised through the generous contributions of donors.

Driven by the exemplary career of his musical hero, Kristian Zimmerman, Jason’s ambitions stretch far beyond his present situation. He dreams of achieving international renown as a pianist, envisioning a future filled with global tours, performances at celebrated concerts, and sharing his classical music passion worldwide. Beyond performing, Jason aims to contribute to the musical world by designing instruments, producing captivating YouTube content, and furthering his studies at a distinguished music college in Germany.
Central to Jason’s ethos is a deep-seated belief in music’s capacity to inspire, heal, and unite. His narrative exemplifies how resilience, inventive flair, and communal support can enable young talents to surmount obstacles. Jason hopes to encourage other young musicians with his insight: “Music is a very beautiful thing, and if you love it, pursue it. You have endless opportunities.”
As a single mum, Leanne Haas, couldn’t be prouder of her talented son.
“I am extremely proud of Jason’s accomplishments, and his Go-getter attitude in life. Despite all the challenges we have faced, he always adjusted well, did well in school, and made new friends wherever we went. I admire his resilience.
Growing up without a father hasn’t been easy, but he never let it affect him, and he has grown up to be quite an “Alpha Male” as he calls himself.” – says Leanne

In the early hours of March 6, 2018, Mhlengi Gwala, then in his late twenties and a rising star in international triathlon from South Africa, endured an attack that would irrevocably alter his life.
During a training session in Durban, he was viciously assaulted by assailants who pulled him from his bike and brutally injured him, sawing into the calf of his right leg, severely damaging muscles, nerves, and bones, before attacking his left leg. Yet, this harrowing incident did not break Gwala’s spirit; rather, it paved the way for a new chapter in his life as a para-athlete.

Born and raised in the Chesterville township of Durban, Gwala, now 32, faced a monumental transformation following the assault. As he was undergoing surgery, a friend initiated a BackaBuddy crowdfunding campaign aptly titled “Get Mhlengi back on his bike.” This campaign struck a chord with people globally, raising over R764,000, vital for his medical expenses rehabilitation, and also contributing towards building a house for his mother.
Fast forward to 2024, and Gwala has emerged as a formidable figure in para-athletics. Taking control of his fate, he launched a new BackaBuddy campaign to support his journey to The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, where he will compete alongside 4,400 athletes from a record number of National Paralympic Committees.

Gwala is set to participate in the challenging Para triathlon, which will start from a floating pontoon at the iconic Pont Alexandre III bridge in Paris. This picturesque course will lead him past notable landmarks, including a 750m swim in the Seine, followed by a 20km bike and 5km run through areas near landmarks such as Le Grand Palais and l’Assemblée nationale.
Gwala’s relentless resilience has led to remarkable achievements in his sporting career. He has been crowned a 3x African champion and has achieved significant placements in various international competitions, including:
– **12th Place:** 2021 World Championships in Abu Dhabi
– **1st Place:** 2022 RSA Championship
– **7th Place:** 2022 World Para Cup in Coruna
– **1st Place:** 2023 African Championship in Hurghada

As Mhlengi prepares for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, scheduled for August 28 to September 8, his profound dedication to his sport is reflected in his rigorous training routine. Embracing the disciplines of running, swimming, and cycling, Gwala is leaving no stone unturned in his quest for Paralympic glory.
To support this journey, he has initiated a crowdfunding campaign on BackaBuddy to purchase a Speed Concept SLR 7 bike, which costs about R195,000.

Newlyweds Amber Jempson, a 24-year-old Administrative Clerk, and her partner Calvin, a 25-year-old skipper from Sunningdale, Cape Town, are devoted fur-parents to Micheal, a rescue cat, and Bailey, their rescue dachshund. The remarkable and unlikely bond between Micheal and Bailey, celebrated on their Instagram page, has captured the hearts of their humble following.
Furry Instagram celebrities and best friends, Micheal and Bailey
However, tragedy struck on January 2nd when Micheal, just one-year-old, accidentally fell from the fourth floor of their apartment building. This unfortunate incident left Micheal with fractures in both of his legs, necessitating urgent medical attention.
Amber recounted the heartbreaking details of the accident, saying, “We were on the balcony for our morning sun and coffee, we had mesh up, but the estate we live in made everyone remove it due to aesthetic reasons. I looked away for a split second, and something caught Micheal’s attention on the little ledge. I did not want to scare him, so I called him back inside because I thought if he got safely out there, he would be able to bring himself safely in. He was doing great until he got his hips stuck and panicked, and in a normal cat reaction, he tried to reverse. He pushed too quickly, and I started running towards him, but I wasn’t able to grab him in time.”

While insurance did provide some coverage, the damage caused by the fall was extensive. Amber recalled, “Micheal was awake and crying. Thankfully, there was no blood, but that cry will stay with me forever! I could see his front paw was broken, but had no idea the back had snapped too.”
The estimated expenses included R2,500 for an emergency vet visit, over R40,000 for surgical procedures, and more than R8,000 for post-operative care.
Amber, feeling helpless but resolute in her determination to save Micheal, launched a crowdfunding campaign on BackaBuddy. The campaign aimed to raise R65,000 to cover the hefty medical bills. So far, it has garnered tremendous support, with 10 generous donors contributing over R17 400 to help Michael on his road to recovery.
Micheal underwent a successful seven-hour surgery at Sunset Veterinary Clinic, where screws and wires were expertly placed to mend his broken bones. The joy of his family, and especially Bailey (exuberantly wagging her tail), was immeasurable when Micheal finally returned home.

The pair, accustomed to doing everything together, is now temporarily separated by a crate as Micheal undergoes a six-week recovery process.
Amber shared the heartwarming details of their friendship, saying, “They love to play fight on the couch and go on beautiful walks together!”
The response from the Cape Town community has been nothing short of heartwarming. Friends and complete strangers, moved by the unlikely friendship between Micheal and Bailey, have stepped up to donate and send their good wishes. Amber and Calvin have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support.
Amber shared her gratitude, saying, “We thought we were going to lose our beautiful boy. We were so overcome with emotions, but to see strangers who have never even met Micheal donating and sending good wishes, it was just so heartwarming.”

Micheal‘s journey began when Amber and Calvin were on a trip to KZN (South Coast) for their wedding. Amber shared the heartwarming story, saying, “My husband and myself had made the journey back to KZN for our wedding, and on the way down, my mother sent us a few photos of kittens. The mother had been rescued, and she had given birth to six beautiful kittens who were looking for homes. We saw the photo of Micheal, and it was instant love at first sight! He had the most beautiful blue eyes and white whiskers. We bought all the supplies needed and drove back to Cape Town as a family of 3.”
Currently, Micheal is on the mend, having completed two of his eight weeks in the crate. His bandages and stitches have been removed, and he’s yearning for cuddles and attention. While he can walk, his recovery is ongoing as his legs are still a bit stiff.
In about 7 months, Micheal will have to have another operation to remove the screws and plates, as he is still growing, and if he doesn’t have the operation, it will affect his ability to walk.
Looking ahead, Amber and Calvin are determined to move to a safer home for Micheal and Bailey, away from the dangers of a high-rise apartment. They are actively searching for a new home where Micheal and Bailey can enjoy a secure and happy life together.
In the vibrant suburb of Rosebank, Cape Town, Lauren and Luke Kincaid, both 38, are on an incredible journey marked by unexpected challenges and the unwavering support of their community as they navigate the tough road of infertility.
Their journey together began on a dating site, Tinder, seven years ago, swiftly blossoming into a deep connection that seemed destined. Though their anticipated wedding in May 2020 was delayed due to the pandemic, they eventually tied the knot in February 2021, eagerly anticipating the start of their family.

Their path to parenthood, however, was met with unforeseen obstacles. Lauren’s fervent dream of motherhood faced challenges when difficulties conceiving arose after months of trying. Medical intervention became necessary, yet navigating the realm of fertility treatments revealed a series of setbacks and unexpected diagnoses.
Despite several unsuccessful rounds of IVF in April and July 2023 stemming from Lauren’s low ovarian reserve, a glimmer of hope emerged with a different diagnosis—Hypopituitarism. This discovery opened doors to a specialized treatment using injectable medication available in the private sector, potentially enabling Lauren to conceive using her own eggs.
“After the first IVF failed my heart was crushed with disappointment and sadness but there was still hope that it could happen for us on a second round of IVF. However, when our second round failed due to no eggs and we were told that our only option now would probably be using a donor egg my world felt like it was coming crashing down around me. I had always imagined being a mother but never like this. I assumed that my child would look like me so that information was shocking and heartbreaking to take in. I just cried when the doctor relayed the news, but, after processing it that evening, both Luke and I realized that it was still a blessing that there was still a way for us to become parents even if it is a bit unconventional.” says Lauren.
However, financial constraints became a significant barrier. The overwhelming costs of fertility treatments, scans, and medications stretched their resources thin, hindering access to the required treatment.
Crowdfunding on BackaBuddy
In light of these challenges, Lauren and Luke turned to crowdfunding on BackaBuddy, where their story resonated deeply with friends, family, and compassionate strangers.
Over R50,000 was raised with the support of over 40 donors, helping them realize their dream of parenthood.

“We are immensely grateful for the overwhelming support and contributions received thus far. We acknowledge the pivotal role that every donation plays in bringing us closer to our dream of becoming parents. We wholeheartedly believe that with the support of our community, we can overcome this seemingly insurmountable challenge.” Lauren expresses.
Their journey embodies the resilience of the human spirit, underscored by the enduring power of hope and love. Your continued contributions and support are pivotal in making their dream a reality.

Subsequently, a sore manifested on her breast, progressively increasing in size and causing severe pain. Seeking a second opinion, Niki consulted another doctor who recommended a core needle biopsy, the results confirmed a positive diagnosis for cancer. Through various scans and tests, medical professionals eventually identified cancer present in both of Niki’s breasts and in her lymph nodes.
‘This news was a devastating blow to my family and I, especially to my daughter who took the news the hardest.’ Niki shared. reflecting on the emotional turmoil that accompanied her diagnosis. It was a moment that shattered her world and profoundly affected her family, especially her 11-year-old daughter who refused to believe that this is happening to her mother.
The journey that ensued was nothing short of a grueling uphill climb. Niki underwent numerous medical tests, needle biopsies, and treatments, including the notorious “red devil” chemotherapy – Adriamycin and Cyclophosphamide. Despite enduring its harsh side effects, none of these treatments initially proved effective. The toll was evident: hair loss, chronic fatigue, joint pain, nerve pain, and neuropathy became constant companions.

‘It took a while for me to process my diagnosis, but I quickly got my mind set right and knew I could beat this even though it was going to be hard. I knew I had to fight with all I have so I can be there for my children and see them grow up. I still have the fear of not being there no matter how positive I feel,’ Niki recalled, emphasizing her determination to overcome the obstacles.
Hope emerged for Niki when her oncologists recommended Herceptin, a targeted treatment showing promise for her condition. But, financial constraints proved to pose a significant obstacle especially without any medical aid.
However, Niki managed to undergo eight sessions of Herceptin, marking a significant step forward in her battle against cancer with the help of family and friends, who decided to support her financially.
‘The treatment is going well. The oncologists are happy with the results so far but I still have a long way to go and it is far from over,’Niki expressed, acknowledging the uphill road ahead.
On 25 July 2023, Niki underwent a modified radical bilateral mastectomy with flap closure, a step necessitated by the aggressive nature of her cancer. This surgical intervention was followed by the removal of 21 lymph nodes, signifying a critical phase in her journey.
But, the road to recovery continues with more rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, highlighting the ongoing challenges she faces.
