Cape Town Initiative ‘Love Wins’ Targets Urgent Need for GBV Intervention

Cape Town Initiative ‘Love Wins’ Targets Urgent Need for GBV Intervention

Neil Matthews, a 46-year-old businessman from Gardens, Cape Town, is pioneering a vital initiative to combat gender-based violence (GBV) in South Africa—where the rates of violence against women and children are among the highest globally.

At his day job at YAXXA, a business solutions company, Matthews is leveraging his professional resources and personal passion to spearhead the “Love Wins” campaign through a crowdfunding effort on BackaBuddy.

Alarming Statistics

South Africa faces a severe crisis in gender-based violence, a fact underscored by statistics provided by Women For Change (WFC).

The femicide rate in South Africa is five times higher than the global average, with one woman murdered every 2.5 hours. In the year 2022/23 alone, the SA reported 4,169 women and 1,192 children murdered. Additionally, there were 43,037 rape cases and 53,888 sexual offences reported to the police, with an estimated more than 95% of sexual offences not reported at all. According to WFC, this ranks South Africa fourth in death rates from interpersonal violence among 183 countries—the highest rate outside of a war zone.

Why ‘Love Wins’?

For Matthews, ‘Love Wins’ is more than just a slogan; it is a principle of action. “It means that before you act, think, and lead with love, because love wins”’ he explains. This belief came into sharp focus when Matthews felt compelled to act against what he describes as ‘a battle between good and evil.’

The turning point was his encounter with staggering statistics about GBV during a meeting with Women For Change (WFC) over five years ago. The overwhelming need for action led him to eventually launch his campaign on BackaBuddy, dedicating his efforts to raising funds and awareness for a pivotal battle against gender-based violence.

Choosing the Right Allies

With his campaign, Matthews has chosen to support Women For Change (WFC) and the School of Hard Knocks due to their impactful work within the community. WFC, known for its vast reach and deep engagement with GBV victims, and the School of Hard Knocks, which addresses trauma through sports in schools, both align with his vision of creating meaningful change.

Pictured above: Passionate coaches from The School of Hard Knocks

The funds raised through ‘Love Wins’ on BackaBuddy will enable WFC to employ additional staff and a counselor to assist victims with various needs—ranging from emotional support to emergency needs like food, clothing, and transportation. Similarly, contributions to the School of Hard Knocks will sustain programs that feed children, pay coaches, and expand their transformative work.

Although the campaign is progressing slowly, having raised over R3000 so far, Matthews remains optimistic. ‘It’s just me and it’s going quite slow, but Rome wasn’t built in a day,’ he remarks, underscoring his commitment to see this through despite the challenges. His hope for the future in combating GBV is focused on making ‘small changes every day,’ adhering to the belief that ‘ONE IS GREATER THAN ZERO.'”

Impact and How to Contribute

Matthews invites everyone to join the movement by spreading awareness and donating to the cause. These funds will directly support the services provided by Women For Change and the School of Hard Knocks, creating small yet significant impacts that can lead to larger societal changes over time.

The ‘Love Wins’ campaign not only highlights the urgent need to address GBV in South Africa but also demonstrates the power of individual commitment in initiating widespread social change. As Matthews continues his work, he serves as a reminder that every effort counts and that, ultimately, love can win against the forces of violence and inequality.

10 Kilometers for 10 Years: Souper Troopers’ Walk Highlights a Decade of Helping the Homeless

10 Kilometers for 10 Years: Souper Troopers’ Walk Highlights a Decade of Helping the Homeless

As the homeless advocacy organization Souper Troopers marks its 10th anniversary on June 7, 2024, founder Kerry Hoffman, her dedicated team, and many of the individuals they have supported are preparing for a special 10km walk through the heart of Cape Town. This walk, starting and ending at The Humanity Hub—their operational base in Woodstock—will trace their steps through significant areas of Woodstock and the Cape Town CBD, where Souper Troopers has made a notable impact over the past decade.

Pictured above: Kerry Hoffman – Souper Troopers Founder

This event isn’t just a walk down memory lane; it’s a stride toward sustainability. With over 14,000 individuals living on the streets of Cape Town, the need for such transformative efforts remains high. “This 10km walk celebrates our journey and the transformations we’ve witnessed, but it also serves a critical fundraising purpose,” explains Hoffman. A crowdfunding campaign launched on BackaBuddy to support this anniversary event has already raised nearly R50,000 from 29 donors, pushing toward a target of R200,000.

The funds raised are vital for continuing the comprehensive support services offered at The Humanity Hub, where individuals receive not just the essentials—like food, clothing, and toiletries—but also access to counseling, skills training, medical referrals, and much more. “Every rand donated is a step towards ensuring that more people can receive the help they need to turn their lives around,” says Hoffman.

Odette Oliver, who spent many years on the streets of Cape Town, shares her life-changing experience with Souper Troopers. “Souper Troopers helped me to see my self-worth and supported my journey to sobriety and independence. I am so proud that I can pay my bills and be a responsible mother to my child. What sets Souper Troopers apart is that we treat everyone with love, respect, and understanding, which gives each of us the confidence to tackle any challenges that come our way,” says Odette.

The inspiration for Souper Troopers came from Hoffman’s personal life changes and her desire to redirect her compassion from personal relationships to communal care, starting with simple acts of kindness like distributing soup and sandwiches. “It always seems impossible until it’s done,” a quote from Nelson Mandela, echoes as a mantra for the organization, reminding them of the impact even the smallest gestures can have.

Pictured above: Souper Troopers

As they look back on a decade of service, Souper Troopers not only celebrates their achievements but also calls on the community for continued support. Everyone is encouraged to get involved, whether by participating in the walk and seeking sponsorships or by donating directly to their BackaBuddy campaign. Each donation will be matched by an anonymous benefactor, effectively doubling the potential impact.

Staying Safe on the Trails: Avoiding After-Dark Hiking Dangers in the Western Cape

Staying Safe on the Trails: Avoiding After-Dark Hiking Dangers in the Western Cape

As winter approaches in the Western Cape, hikers are facing an unexpected challenge: the earlier onset of darkness. Just this past weekend, a group of hikers from Pretoria found themselves stranded on Table Mountain after dark, highlighting the importance of preparedness during this season.

A Close Call on Table Mountain

On 17 May, the Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR) team responded to an emergency call from a group of hikers aged between 41 and 57. The group had taken the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway to the top and planned to hike down. Unfortunately, misguidance from a passing hiker led them towards Camps Bay. As daylight faded, they realised they were in trouble and called the WSAR emergency number (021 937 0300)

WSAR volunteers quickly located the hikers, providing them with warm clothing, food, water, and head torches to navigate back down safely. One hiker, who was particularly exhausted, was assisted down by the volunteers, demonstrating the dedication and importance of the WSAR team. By 22:40, the entire group was safely off the mountain.

“Our rescue teams responded to a similar call in Skeleton Gorge on Saturday evening after two visiting Russian hikers were left stranded after dark. Rescuers drove up the back table from Constantia Nek and hiked down to locate the two ladies. They were guided back up the trail to the vehicles and driven down to Constantia Nek. We urge all outdoor enthusiasts to take note of the earlier winter sunset times and plan accordingly. Remember to pack a torch and an extra warm layer of clothing. Most importantly, don’t wait, please Call Us Sooner – 021 937 0300,” Nel, a member of WSAR told GoodThingsGuy.

The Vital Work of WSAR

WSAR, a coalition of government agencies and civilian volunteer organisations, plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety of hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. Their recent rescue efforts underscore the importance of their work, especially as winter brings shorter days and colder temperatures.

Tips to Avoid Being Caught Out After Dark

To prevent getting caught in the dark and cold, consider the following tips:

  1. Start Early: Begin your hike early in the day to ensure you have plenty of daylight.
  2. Check Sunset Times: Be aware of when the sun sets and plan to be off the mountain well before then.
  3. Plan Your Route: Familiarise yourself with the trail and have a map or GPS device.
  4. Carry Essentials: Always bring a fully charged phone, extra clothing, food, water, and a head torch.
  5. Stay Informed: Listen to advice from locals and experienced hikers but verify information with reliable sources.

Emergency Information

If you do find yourself in trouble, remember that rescue services in South Africa are free of charge. Save the WSAR emergency number (021 937 0300) to your phone. This number connects you to the Metro Control Centre, which will coordinate the necessary rescue or assistance.

Supporting WSAR

The lifesaving work done by WSAR is invaluable, and there are ways you can support their efforts. Consider contributing to their fund for life-saving equipment via their crowdfunding campaign on BackaBuddy and learn more about their mission and initiatives on their website.

Staff Spotlight: Our Qokolweni ‘Mlungu’ returns from her vibrant village trip in the Eastern Cape.

This December, the BackaBuddy team celebrated an extraordinary cultural exchange that captivated many on TikTok. Central to this enchanting story were two of our valued team members: Monique Weich, the enthusiastic Donor Retention Coordinator, and Lakiwe Blekiwe, the spirited Head of Charities.

Lakiwe, originating from the picturesque village of Qokolweni in the Eastern Cape, extended a warm invitation to Monique to participate in a significant local tradition: her nephews’ Mgidi celebration.

This dynamic event, deeply ingrained in Xhosa culture, signifies a young man’s transition into adulthood.

Monique and Lakiwe, friends and colleagues at BackaBuddy, have nurtured a remarkable bond over the past five years. Their friendship, enriched by mutual respect and appreciation for each other’s cultures, has transcended the confines of the workplace, evolving into a deep, personal connection.

Together, they documented and shared their unique cultural experiences on TikTok, using the handle @qokolweni_mlungu. Lakiwe humorously mentioned having “an Mlungu on my stoep” during the holidays, reflecting the warmth and closeness of their relationship. Their posts did more than just showcase their personal journey; they provided insights into South Africa’s rich cultural heritage, highlighting the power of friendship and collaboration in bridging cultural divides.

Monique’s adventure began with a 23-hour bus journey to Mthatha, which she found surprisingly pleasant despite some delays and the sweltering heat. She experienced a bit of culture shock upon realizing she was the only Mlungu in the area, drawing curious stares and occasional photo requests, which she graciously accepted.

Their TikTok series quickly became a sensation, blending humour with heartfelt moments. It featured everything from the serene landscapes of the Eastern Cape to the lively preparations for the Mgidi celebration, capturing the essence of their journey and the vibrant local culture.

A particularly touching moment in their cultural journey occurred when Lakiwe gave Monique a traditional Xhosa name, ‘Nomathamsanqa’, signifying luck or blessings. This gesture was more than symbolic; it showcased the depth and respect within their friendship.

Lakiwe appreciated Monique’s wholehearted embrace of her culture, noting her adaptation to new and sometimes challenging experiences.

“From pit toilets to ‘Vaskom’ baths, fermented porridge mornings, and even accepting unreliable transport as normal. What bonded us even more was her love for Mama’s steamed bread and soup – that, she truly cherished,” Lakiwe commented.

Cape Town’s Compassionate Crusader: Teenager Trinity Van Beeck’s Mission to Aid the Homeless

Cape Town’s Compassionate Crusader: Teenager Trinity Van Beeck’s Mission to Aid the Homeless

In a world often defined by chaos and uncertainty, Trinity Van Beeck, a 16-year-old teenager from Brackenfell, carries a heart brimming with empathy and a burning desire to make a difference.

Trinity, a dedicated student at Curro Durbanville High School, currently in Grade 10, and an active member of the Cape Town Junior City Council, is on a mission to bring about significant change in her community by providing ‘Blessing Bags’ to those who need them the most.

Pictured above: Trinity Van Beeck

Trinity’s story is not merely a tale of academic achievements and her passion for chess; it’s a narrative of compassion, empathy, and unwavering determination. She’s the driving force behind “Horizons of Hope,” a project dedicated to delivering essential hygiene kits to the homeless individuals of Cape Town.

In South Africa, the issue of homelessness has reached alarming proportions, leaving countless individuals and families without stable shelter. For them, access to basic hygiene products often remains an unattainable dream, exacerbating the challenges they face in their daily lives. Trinity recognized this crisis and took it upon herself to take action.

“Horizons of Hope” stands as Trinity’s response to the pressing issue of homelessness. She passionately expresses,

“It is no secret that homelessness in South Africa has reached unprecedented levels. Despite our country’s rich cultural diversity and vast economic potential, we are also confronted with the daunting challenge of homelessness. A substantial portion of our population grapples with the harsh realities of living without a stable shelter. For these individuals and their families, obtaining access to basic hygiene products often proves to be an impossible task, further intensifying the challenges that most of us can’t even begin to imagine. ‘Horizons of Hope’ is my response to this pressing issue and the dire need for support within the homeless community. Our mission is clear: To provide essential hygiene kits to the most vulnerable members of our society.”

Each Blessing Bag, with a cost ranging between R100 and R110, contains items like toothpaste, deodorant, toothbrushes, facecloths, feminine hygiene products, wet wipes, lotion, and soap. While these may seem like everyday items to many of us, they can make a world of difference to those who lack access to them.

To finance her “Horizons of Hope” campaign, Trinity initiated a crowdfunding effort on BackaBuddy with a goal of raising R11,000 to purchase 110 bags. She has made significant progress, having raised over R3400 already, thanks to the generosity of 10 donors.

Trinity’s journey toward making a difference commenced at an exceptionally young age. Her mother, Marisa Laas, lovingly recalls,

“At only 3 years old, Trinity asked me to make a list of things she needed to give to ‘the poor people,’ this included a car, purple paint for their houses, and toys for the children. She has always been a beautiful empathetic soul with a heart for those less fortunate than herself. I am so proud to be a bystander in her journey through life.”

Pictured above: Trinity and her mom, Marisa

Trinity’s compassionate spirit and unwavering determination are truly inspiring as she strives to bring about positive change in the lives of the homeless in her community.

At the age of 12, Trinity displayed her benevolence by raising over R40,000 on BackaBuddy to assist her 11-year-old chess prodigy friend, Amahle Zenzile, from Crossroads in Cape Town, to travel to Namibia and participate in the African Youth Chess Tournament.

Trinity’s mission serves as a poignant reminder that even the smallest act of kindness can ignite a wave of positive change. She is indeed a beacon of hope in her community.
