Nkosikho’s good deed

When Monet van Deventer stopped at a petrol station in Cape Town and realised she had forgotten her bank card at home, good samaritan, Nkosikho Mbele, offered to fill her tank with R100 to ensure she got home safely.

To thank him for his kind deed, she set up a campaign with a fundraising target of R100 000 that soon gained support from over 2500 donors, raising over R500 000 in total.

Saving Aaron

Aaron Lipschitz (5) from Sea Point, Cape Town, is the first child in South Africa to be diagnosed with Interleukin-12 Receptor Defect, a rare genetic condition that affects the immune system.

With no cure for Aaron’s condition, the only way for him to overcome his recurrent infections, was to have a bone marrow transplant which was made possible in August 2018 with the support of generous donors.

To date, over R1.6 Million has been raised to support Aaron’s medical treatment on BackaBuddy.

Eco-warrior, Romario Valentine

Romario Valentine (11) is a young eco-warrior from Umhlanga, Durban, who has dedicated his last two birthdays to raise funds to support his favourite bird park, plant trees and build an aviary.

Focused on saving our environment, Romario’s efforts have garnered international attention, and he has been featured by 50/50, National Geographic Kids, Global Citizen and has even appeared on a panel with The United Nations!

When Naledi Thahanyane was 4-years-old, she was in urgent need of surgery after it was discovered that she had a heart defeat.

Without the funds to cover Naledi’s medical needs, the children’s home in which she lives, reached out for support. With an outpouring of love and support, over R260 000 was raised to save her life.

Rebuilding Knysna

In the wake of the Knysna Fires in June 2017, Former Miss South Africa, Demi Leigh Nel Peters launched a campaign on BackaBuddy to help rebuild her hometown after fires raged through the Garden Route.

Urging South Africans to support her cause for the Sedgefield Lions Club, over R820 000 was raised, exceeding the initial target of R500 000 to provide supplies for the families that lost their homes and livelihoods in the blaze.

Transkei Animal Welfare Initiative

The Transkei Animal Welfare Initiative, a small NPO in the former Transkei area providing primary animal health care to companion animals in one of the most rural areas in South Africa, is bringing festive cheer to Port St. Johns this Christmas by sending a veteran to assist the community in preventing unwanted breeding and puppy de-worming.

Animal Antics Pet Rescue

St Helena Sandveld Hospice

The St Helena Sandveld Hospice needs to raise an additional R10 000 in December to help fund a replacement vehicle for their dedicated nurses to visit their patients in their homes. The hospice visits approximately 65 patients a month, none of whom are obliged to pay for this care.

Following one of the worst floods in South Africa’s history, this past Monday, 11th April 22’ in KwaZulu Natal, over 443 residents have sadly lost their lives, 63 people are still missing and 13 000 properties and infrastructures have been irreparably damaged.

Generously South Africans have been answering the call and stepping in to help the KZN residents rebuild their lives and prepare for the cold to come.

Gift of the Givers

In response to the devastating impact caused by the heavy rain, non-profit organisation, the Gift of the Givers Foundation has stepped in to assist with hot meals, blankets, bottled water, warm clothes, sanitary pads and diapers for those in low lying areas who have lost their material possessions.

Penny Appeal South Africa

With flooding affecting much of the Durban area, hundreds have been displaced and require immediate aid. The Penny Appeal South Africa is currently on the ground assessing the needs and providing food aid, clothing, and blankets. Their Help for R100 project asks for a minimum donation of R100 to assist with their relief efforts. 

Since the launch of the campaign over R19 000 has been raised.

The campaign is estimated at R25 000 to support over 150 staff members.This will likely afford them around R150 per person which isn’t much, especially considering the uncertainty around whether this lockdown will be extended beyond 2 weeks.

Currently battling Covid-19, Liesl Joubert is hospitalised at Eugene Marais Hospital suffering from severe lung damage due to the disease. Her niece, Alicia, has started a BackaBuddy campaign to help raise funds in covering Liesl’s upcoming medical expenses which include, but are not limited to, full-time oxygen treatment and home care for at least the next month, the remainder of the hospital bill, and a backup generator for oxygen machine to cover load shedding sessions.

Jesse Sher has started an amazing 109km virtual cycling race fundraising initiative for the Rohan Bloom Foundation, which is building the First Specialized Paediatric Palliative Care In-Patient Hospice in the Western Cape.
