Sylvia Kirstein believed that a child who needed help with reading should be able to receive it. She gave lessons freely and made learning feel personal.
After Sylvia was killed during a robbery, the Melkbos community faced a painful question: how could grief become something that still served the children she cared about? The answer took shape at the Melkbos Care Centre. The Sylvia Reading House and therapy space brings books, learning support and emotional care together. It is a place where children can strengthen literacy, speak with trained support and experience the steadiness of a community-built room.
Nothing can make the loss smaller. The project does something different. It allows Sylvia’s way of showing up for children to keep moving through new hands, teachers, therapists, donors, neighbours and every young reader who opens a book inside.
