A classroom question can travel a very long way. For Grade 11 learner Zayaan, it travelled from Mondale High School in Mitchells Plain to a design challenge focused on living and working beyond Earth.
Zayaan became part of the South African team selected for an international space settlement design final at Kennedy Space Center. Working with other teenagers, she helped develop a concept for a lunar base, contributing to the planning and technical thinking needed to make an imagined settlement feel possible. The trip would bring several firsts, including her first flight and first journey outside South Africa. Those milestones made the cost of participating especially significant for her family.
The campaign is about more than reaching a famous destination. It is about allowing a young person who has already done the work to enter the room, meet peers, test her ideas and see that a future in science and design can include her.
