When a life-altering medical emergency strikes without warning, a family’s world can turn upside down in an instant. For Carina Smit and her family, that exact moment came when her husband, Tinus—the family’s sole breadwinner, loving father, and devoted husband—suffered a severe, unexpected stroke.
Overnight, Tinus was thrust into a fight for his health, independence, and basic motor functions. While the family was profoundly grateful that he survived, they immediately faced two overwhelming realities: the grueling road of long-term stroke rehabilitation and the financial crisis of losing their only income.
Without medical aid or government assistance available to bridge the gap, Carina faced the heartbreaking possibility of eviction while trying to care for her husband.
Recognizing that they couldn’t do it alone, Carina turned to BackaBuddy to launch a campaign titled Help Tinus Rebuild His Life After a Devastating Stroke.
When Emergency Calls for Action
Accessing private rehabilitation services, including essential speech, occupational, and physical therapy, is critical in the early months after a stroke. Just as seen in other medical crowdfunding campaigns helping South African families face sudden health crises, the cost of private therapy, specialized equipment, and daily living expenses can quickly become insurmountable.
Carina reached out to the BackaBuddy community with a humble goal: raise R100,000 to cover immediate medical expenses, secure basic living needs, and keep a roof over their heads while Tinus received early-stage medical care.
The response from friends, strangers, and the broader community was nothing short of extraordinary.
Blowing Past the Target
Within weeks, donations flooded in from across the country. Through dozens of acts of kindness, the initial target of R100,000 was completely blown out of the water. In an emotional update to her donors, Carina shared the immense relief and gratitude her family felt:
“A seriously HUGE thank you to all of you for making a difference… My initial target R100k was blown out the water and I am just so grateful that the roof over our heads is secure for now.”
Beyond providing immediate financial stability, the overwhelming support rekindled something just as essential for the family: hope. Like many inspiring stroke recovery stories across South Africa, this outpouring of love proved that when people rally together around a family in crisis, the impact goes far beyond the numbers on a screen.
Preparing for Tinus’s Homecoming
With their immediate living situation secured, Carina has now turned her focus toward the next milestone in Tinus’s recovery: bringing him home safely.
Navigating life after a major illness often requires unexpected physical adjustments to the living space. To ensure Tinus can move around freely in a wheelchair, Carina has increased the campaign target to fund essential home alterations before he arrives, including adding accessibility ramps to the bedroom and bathroom.
Once back home, Tinus will continue his journey with ongoing physiotherapy, speech therapy, and fine motor skills training through occupational therapy.
“I am confident that thanks to the love and support you have shown him, we will make it through this. One step at a time.” — Carina
