After a motorcycle accident left his right arm paralysed, Henno rebuilt his sporting life and set his sights on a full Ironman.
A motorcycle accident changed the way Henno Hendrikse moves through the world, leaving his right arm paralysed. It did not remove his appetite for challenge. Through adaptation, disciplined training and determined problem-solving, he returned to endurance sport and completed Ironman 70.3 Mossel Bay.
Now the Henno Hendrikse Ironman journey is moving towards an even bigger goal: completing a full Ironman. His BackaBuddy campaign invites supporters to help with costs that sit behind the visible race day, including coaching, nutrition, accommodation and adapted equipment such as a more aerodynamic bicycle.
Learning to race in a changed body
Triathlon already asks an athlete to manage three disciplines, long hours and constant transitions. Henno had to rethink those demands around paralysis in his right arm. Training became an exercise in adaptation as much as fitness, with techniques and equipment needing to work for his particular range of movement.
Completing the 70.3 distance proved that those adaptations could hold across a demanding event. The finish line carried the weight of every early session, setback and adjustment that came before it. It also gave Henno a foundation from which to imagine the full distance as a real, reachable objective.
The work between one finish line and the next
A full Ironman is not simply a longer version of the same day. It requires a sustained training block, careful recovery, reliable equipment and logistical planning. For an adaptive athlete, small practical details can determine whether preparation remains safe and consistent.
Henno’s campaign helps bring those hidden requirements into view. Coaching, nutrition, accommodation and specialised or adapted equipment form part of the journey, even though the public usually sees only the result. Community support gives him more room to concentrate on the physical and mental work of preparing.
Redefining what progress looks like
Henno’s story does not pretend that life after injury is easy. Its optimism comes from the way he continues to create possibilities inside a changed reality. Every training milestone reflects patience, while every race challenges narrow assumptions about who belongs in endurance sport.
The next goal is personal, but its meaning travels. Other people navigating disability or major change can see an athlete building forward rather than waiting for perfect circumstances. That is why the Henno Hendrikse Ironman journey has become a source of encouragement well beyond the course.
The wider impact
Sporting milestones are built across seasons rather than on one competition day. Coaching, recovery, transport and repeated practice create the platform from which an athlete can perform. When the public supports that platform, it helps protect the consistency that progress requires and gives talent a fairer chance to meet opportunity.
A public campaign also makes participation flexible. Some supporters can donate, others can share the story with a school, club, workplace or professional network, and some may be able to offer expertise or an introduction. These different forms of help are most useful when they remain centred on the stated goal and the choices of the people leading the campaign.
Responsible storytelling is part of that support. Using accurate names, avoiding exaggerated promises and linking readers to the live campaign preserves trust. It lets the achievement remain hopeful without hiding the work still required, and it gives future updates a strong factual foundation as circumstances change.
What support can make possible
Crowdfunding works best when readers can see the goal, understand the need and choose how to participate. The campaign page brings those details together and remains the best place to check the latest total, updates and any changes to the plan before donating.
- Accommodation and event logistics
- Training, coaching, nutrition and adapted equipment
- A visible example of adaptive sporting ambition
Support is not limited to a financial contribution. Sharing the campaign with a relevant community, sending a message of encouragement or introducing the story to a potential partner can expand its reach. A series of modest actions can create the momentum that makes a large target feel possible.
