Every school day begins before the first lesson. It begins at the gate, on the path into the grounds, and in the feeling a learner carries as they arrive.
At Knysna Primary School, the ageing entrance and driveway had become increasingly difficult to use, especially in wet weather. The school set out to pave the area so that learners, families, staff and visitors could move through a safer, more accessible and more welcoming space.
The project quickly became bigger than bricks and paving. Classes took part in a friendly fundraising challenge. Parents, local businesses and community members were invited to contribute what they could. Work began while the wider campaign continued, turning a practical need into a visible example of shared ownership.
A repaired entrance may sound ordinary, but it touches every learner who walks through it. It says that their safety matters, that their school is cared for, and that a community can improve a place by building it together.
