Errieda du Toit has spent years helping South Africans recognise the stories carried by recipes, kitchens and shared tables.
After a fall caused a fractured neck and a stroke, the author, producer and much-loved ‘huiskok’ began a long recovery involving surgery, therapy and full-time assisted care. The costs extended far beyond a single hospital stay.
In Stellenbosch, the food and wine community responded in the language it knows best. Chefs, producers, venues and supporters contributed their time, ingredients and expertise to a fundraising dinner. Others joined the BackaBuddy campaign from near and far.
The gathering reflected the shape of Errieda’s own work: people around a table, each bringing something, creating more together than any one person could alone. This time, the meal was also a way of saying that someone who had nourished a community would not face recovery without it.
What people made possible
- The fundraiser united chefs, producers, venues and guests.
- Support contributes to assisted care, therapy and ongoing recovery needs.
- The campaign gives readers and food lovers outside Stellenbosch a way to participate.
