Public spaces become part of a city’s memory quietly. A child learns to swim. Friends meet on a hot afternoon. Families return each summer without needing to explain why.

Zoo Lake Pool has held those moments for close to a century. But ageing inlet and outlet pipes have caused leaks and water loss, leaving the community-facing facility in need of major repairs before another full swimming season.

Friends of Zoo Lake Pool, the nonprofit that helps care for the space, launched a campaign to fund the work. The appeal is practical; repair pipes, stop the leaks and get the pool ready but it also asks what it takes to keep a shared place public, safe and alive.

Saving a community pool is not only about concrete and water. It is about preserving an affordable place for movement, connection and relief in the middle of the city.

What people made possible

  • The campaign targets urgent inlet and outlet pipe repairs.
  • Repairs would reduce water loss and support reopening.
  • A local nonprofit gives residents a direct role in protecting the public facility.
