Zanta Lourens did not need years in obstacle course racing to show that she belonged there. The 16-year-old Gauteng athlete began her OCR journey in April and quickly qualified for the UIPM Obstacle World Championships in Beijing.
Zanta is set to race the 3km and 400m events in the under-17 category as part of the first South African OCR team to compete on this world stage. The courses demand speed, strength, coordination and the calm to solve one obstacle while the clock keeps moving.
She already has experience representing South Africa in related multisport disciplines. Beijing adds a new challenge and a substantial self-funded cost. Her family’s campaign supports flights, accommodation, registration, team fees, kit and specialist preparation.
The place on the start line was earned through performance. Community support can help make sure the cost of reaching it does not become the obstacle that stops her.
